The books! Tell us more about the books!
When I mentioned that Ogden Whitney isn't as "unknown" as he was in 2006, that's actually in part because of Art Out of Time's editor, Dan Nadel, who's more or less Whitney's biggest fan, going so far as to also edit a collection of Whitney romance comics.
I think what pushed me over the edge to get Shazam: The Golden Age of The World’s Mightiest Mortal was the inclusion of a complete Jack Kirby/Joe Simon story that was originally published in Captain Marvel Adventures #1. There's a novelty to seeing Kirby try and imitate another artist's work given that 30 years later everyone in the industry would be imitating his but I digress, I like the thin under-detailed figures here.
I think right now I'm more impressed with anything Jack Cole has done ASIDE from Plastic Man. His horror work benefits from him being able to draw faces and expressions that are twisted grimaces and reach the uncanny valley at times. Trying to reach an epiphany with Plastic Man but I haven't done it yet.
I was surprised by how much I like Dick Briefer's comedic take on Frankenstein, to the point where yeah its my favorite era of his work on the character. Not "laugh out loud" funny, more cute and cuddly than anything, but I consistently reach a point of "that was fucking awesome" when I finish one of those stories. I'm surprised it took up to this decade for someone (namely: PS Artbooks) to finally collect all of it.
Come to think, Plastic Man has never been 100% collected, DC gave up after eight volumes of their Archive Editions, but PS Artbooks is only doing the solo Plastic Man title rather than anything from Police Comics. What a world we live in...
